2 Cashmere Cloth
A large trade is done in cotton cashmeres, which are generally dyed black, although colours are sometimes shown. The following are standard makes: - 56-in. full, 90 yards, 52 X 140, 36's/28's, 43-lb.; 41-in. full, 90 yards, 80 X 104, 36's/40's; 221/2-in. full, 90 yards, 78 X 114, 32's/28's, 25-lb. The weave is 2 X 1 twill, and super weft is used. Another cashmere is made with a cotton warp, which is printed before weaving, and either cotton or wool weft. Used for dress purposes. About 68 X 132, 2/60's cotton, 56's botany. The name is obtained from the Cashmere goat, whose wool was first used to make cashmeres. This wool cashmere is still made in Yorkshire. Such as 56-in., 68 X 140, 54's/18's worsted. A cashmere made for China with a few ends of coloured worsted at each selvedge is known as " Worsted Border Cashmere." A standard quality is made 36-in., 120 yard, 54 X 104, 36's/28's, 12 ends worsted each side. The cloth is dyed and has a special lustrous finish. 3 Back Cloth
An unbleached all-cotton plain cloth used as a reinforcing cloth for calico printing to support the fabric being printed. Made in many qualities from 72 X 72, 36/36, to high reeds and picks. -
4 Lancaster Cloth
A light, washable oilcloth used on shelves, tables, round wash basins, etc. Made with a cotton back and with a face dressing of linseed oil, etc. compound, generally with a white, cream or light coloured ground with imitation marble veining in colour, or other printed design. -
5 Rice Cloth
An all-cotton plain weave fabric made 41-in. wide from hard-spun warp yarn and a fancy weft of the slub character. The slubs occur every few inches. About 42's warp, 56 ends and 60 picks per inch. Both piece-dyed and printed. -
6 Cretonne
A printed cotton cloth, 30's to 40's warp, 6's to 10's condenser weft, plain or twill weave. Printed in bold patterns, the fabric being covered with pattern. Used for curtains and furniture cloths. Widths up to 50-in. Satin and oatmeal weaves are sometimes used, but most cretonnes are woven plain or 2 & 2 twill. Indian cretonnes are usually 42-in. wide when finished, 48 ends and 32 picks per inch, 36's T., 8's W. A better quality for furniture is made 42-in. wide, 84 ends and 40 picks per inch, 2/50's T., 14's W. In this cloth the warp is printed before weaving. A cloth printed on both sides is popular and usually woven with an oatmeal ground as illustrated herewith. The cloth is reversible and used for curtains. The quality is about 48 ends and 32 picks per inch, 30's T., 8's W.

7 Calico
In Lancashire this name is applied generally to any plain weave cloth coarser than muslin. Originally meant a printed cotton cloth. The name came from Calicut (India) where the art of colour printing was first practised Printed calicoes now generally pass under the name of chintz or prints. The term calico has practically no recognition in the manufacturing side of the trade and is only to be found in retail shops where it means any plain weave cloth used for ordinary domestic purposes, and is coarser than muslins. 19 Damask
A cotton cloth woven with jacquard designs and used for table covers, napkins, curtains, upholstery cloth, etc. They can be reversible or one-sided only. Designs may be floral or geometrical. Yams 8's to 40's warp and weft. The ground and figure are bound by uniform weaves, generally twill or satin. The figure is developed by interchanging the warp and weft and the pattern so made up that the reflection of light on the threads brings out the effect. Linen and silk damasks only differ in material, as cotton damasks are made in very fine yarns. ———————— A fabric of single structure formed by two satin weaves with figure developed in warp and ground in weft satin weaves resulting in a design that shows very clearly as a warp figure on a weft ground. The figure can be made more prominent by using coloured yam. For table damasks a cotton warp with linen weft is often used. Damasks are made in numerous qualities, but all are figured in the five- or eight-shaft satin weaves. As early as the reign of Henry VIII a damask was a rich figured satin or linen and a damask was known in England as early as the 13th century. The name is derived from Damascus and is presumed to refer to the design and not the material. The finest linen damask is woven about 126 ends and 188 picks per inch from superior flax yarns. The finished sizes vary up to 90-in. wide, 6 yards long, and as a rule damask napkins and table tops can be obtained to match. Standard cloths of single damask are made: - Five-end satin, 60-ends and 56 picks per inch, 50's T., 35's lea W., boiled; 8-end satin, 80 ends and 76 picks per inch, 50's T., 60's lea W., boiled (see Double Damask) ———————— Originally an all-silk fabric with large designs developed in many colours. It was a heavy cloth with satin ground and weft figure. Imitations are now made with cotton warp and cotton or rayon weft. Used for dresses, and when very heavy for curtains, furnishings, dancing shoes, etc. The brocade effects are developed in colour or fancy weaves. Damasse Arabesque has arabesque designs. Damasse Brocat has gold and silver weft for figuring. Damasse Broche has flowered designs. Damasse Cachenir has palm leaf designs. Damasse Chine has printed silk warps. Damasse Egyptien has Egyptian designs. Damasse Jardinier is an expensive damask made with silk warp and fine mercerised cotton weft. The design is of detached flowers in colours. Many coloured wefts are used. -
20 Delaine
A light, all-wool cloth of plain weave, usually printed either in the piece or warp printed. The illustration is typical of the type of design printed on wool delaines, four or more colours often being employed. The term is derived from " Mousseline delaine," which signifies " wool muslin." A good quality is made 54 ends and 64 picks per inch, 46's/64's botany, but up to 64 ends and 70 picks per inch, and from 40's to 70's yarn are used. The example illustrated is made with 56 ends and 50 picks per inch, 46's worsted warp, 64's worsted weft. Cotton delaines are now made as imitations, and a general term for the cotton cloth is "delainette".
